The church of Santa Margherita stands on the ruins of the ancient settlement of Borghetto, near Mendatica, in a landscape of remarkable beauty, an integral part of the regional natural park of the Ligurian Alps. The natural setting has protected it over time, preserving a symbolic and historical testimony of the ancient village destroyed in 1625, during one of the many battles between the Republic of Genoa and the Duchy of Savoy for dominion over the territory of the upper valley.
The origin of the building dates back to the 15th century, but in the early decades of the 16th century it underwent alterations or completion, as confirmed by the date 1512 on the portal of the side entrance, probably the work of stone masons from nearby Genoa. The year 1518 is visible on the black stone pedestal on the right supporting the vault of the apsidiole and probably refers to the year of its construction. From the 17th century, after losing its role as parish church following the destruction of Borghetto, it was used as a temporary shelter for farmers, shepherds and wayfarers passing through the area and, during the First World War, it was even used as accommodation for Polish prisoners employed in the enlargement of the mule track below.
Restorations undertaken between 1968 and 1969 allowed the recovery of the wall paintings featuring stories of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia in the apse, according to the legend handed down in the 13th century by Jacopo da Varazze, and episodes from the life and Passion of Christ which still decorate large portions of the right wall and the counter-façade. They are attributed to Pietro Guido da Ranzo, an artist who was active throughout the Arroscia Valley at the beginning of the 16th century, whose simple, immediate and effective style gave voice to the religious spirit of the mountain people. We also find it in the Stories of the Passion of Christ which he painted in the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie at Montegrazie between 1524 and 1530.

Le scene della Passione di Cristo sono tratte dai Vangeli canonici e sono tra le più diffuse nell’arte Cristiana lungo i secoli. Tra le figure rappresentate a Mendatica è possibile riconoscere la Preghiera nell’Orto del Getsemani, il bacio di Giuda, Cristo dinanzi a Pilato, i centurioni intenti a giocare a dadi la veste del Cristo.
All’interno della chiesa sono inoltre presenti scene della vita di Santa Margherita d’Antiochia: originaria della Pisidia, era figlia di un sacerdote pagano e venne affidata a balia ad una donna che si era convertita segretamente al Cristianesimo e che educò la bambina alla propria fede. Ritornata dal padre, Margherita si manifestò come cristiana e fu da questi cacciata; tornata dalla balia, si diede all’attività del pascolo delle greggi. Notata nei campi dal prefetto romano Ollario, fu da questi richiesta in sposa; Margherita oppose il proprio rifiuto in quanto votatasi alla verginità. Fu quindi imprigionata e condotta in prigione. Qui il diavolo le apparve sotto le sembianze di un drago che la inghiottì, ma la santa si erse con la croce tra le mani e squarciò il ventre della bestia. Portata a giudizio, fu successivamente condannata a morte per decapitazione e uccisa nel 290. In virtù della rappresentazione della scena dell’uccisione del drago, Margherita è invocata dalle puerpere per ottenere un parto facile.
